Fav DIY Self Care Recipes
I originally started making my own beauty care stuff when I started researching and learning the truth about what beauty care products were being sold on the shelf of stores. I have experienced with quite a few, which are fun to make. Some people may think its way out of the ordinary to make your own things to use but I say if its quick, saves you money, works, and is better for you then why not? A lot of these recipes I will share with you today are fairly easy. I wanted to be this way because in all honestly it is easier to go and buy it then make it. If I run out it just takes a couple minuets to make some more which is good for a busy Mom’s schedule. Dotera does make some really awesome self care products too which if I find it too tedious to make my own, I buy their non toxic products.
Note: All the ingredients I use are in its raw form and organic. No reason in making your own if your not going to use the best ingredients:) Also these photos were done when my blog was called something else, thus why the name tag:)
All over Body Lotion
Ingredients
1/4 cup extra virgin coconut oil
1/2 cup raw Shea butter (found at your local heath food store)
3-4 tablespoons arrowroot power (optional, to thicken)
5-10 drops of essential oil of choice, I usually do lavender but you can really do anything you like.
You can add or take away depending oh how thick you like your lotion or you can double the batch to make more if you like.
Method
-The Shea butter will come in very thick almost like a soap bar so cut it up with a knife in small chunks or place it in a bowl and melt it a little bit in the toaster oven. You can also grate with a hand grater it to make it easier which I do a lot.
– Mix the Shea butter with the coconut oil with electric mixture until it very well blending.
-From here you can add your arrowroot powder then begin to mix again. Continue to blend and add your essential oil of choice until it is the consistency you like and everything looks well mixed.
-Place in a sealable jar or bowl. You can also get an empty lotion container and put it in there.
We love this lotion. My whole family uses it. My husband has always hated lotion because he says it leaves a sticky wax feeling but he loves this stuff. It soaks into the skin leaving it supple and smooth. My kids love to be slathered with it after bath time as well. You can not go wrong with this stuff. I have even used it on my lips when I have ran out of chap stick or if I have no diaper cream made or on hand I have used this instead. It last a long time too because a little bit goes a long way.
Brown Sugar Scrub
Ingredients
1 cup raw brown sugar
1/2 cup of favorite oil (olive, almond, sesame, safflower. ect)
1 tsp vitamin E oil (just break open a capsule) Optional
5-10 drops of favorite essential oil (peppermint, douglas, grapefruit, orange, lemon)
Method
-Mix everything together until well blended.
-Place in a sealable jar or bowl.
You can use white sugar if you like with this recipe but I like brown better. I have even added a little oatmeal just for extra scrub. I love this stuff as well. I just use it in the shower all over my body. If I use this right before I shave I don’t even have to use shaving cream. I really makes the skin feel soft and silky! Here are some fun packaging ideas, we just bought these things at Target.
PS. Its a paint to put the lotion in a bottle since the thickness of it so I prefer a more open container. When you fill it you need to get a plastic ziplock bag and snip a tiny whole in the corner of it. This makes for easier filling but its still time consuming. Very fun though for gift ideas:)
Homemade Lip balm
Ingredients
Basic Balm
1/2 tsp. beeswax
1/2 tsp. un-petroleum jelly
1/2 tsp lanolin
Glossy lip balm
1 tbsp. coconut oil
1 tsp un-petroleum jelly
1tsp. beeswax
1 capsule of vitamin E oil
3-5 drops of favorite essential oil.
Method
With both of these recipes you have to melt the beeswax first then add your other ingredients to it. The beeswax will be hot enough that it will make your other ingredients soft and pliable to work with. If you want you can melt everything in a double broiler then just poor it into your desired containers. Make sure everything is mixed well.
I don’t make this a lot seeing how it a lot more work an waiting then other things. I like to make it for gifts or just to have on hand. Good thing is when you make it that it last for a while.
Eye Makeup remover
Ingredients
Equal parts of
Best Quality Witch Hazel and Olive Oil.
I usually do about an 1/8 of a cup of each or less.
Method
Choose a bottle and fill half of it with olive oil and the other half with witch hazel. Shake before each use. Your eye area has the most thin and sensitive skin so this recipe is good because you don’t need to scrub your eye so much. Leaves the eye area really soft and smooth.
I have made this stuff for a while now and I just love it. Its very affordable and easy to make.
Homemade Toothpaste Recipe
Ingredients
4 tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup clay (kaolin, bentonite, ect)
1/4 cup baking soda
Couple of drops cup hydrogen peroxide
1/8 cup sea salt
Teaspoons of clean water to get the consistency you like (optional)
A few drops peppermint, wintergreen, or cinnamon
optional is a dash of stevia or xylitol (this makes for better taste)
Method
Combine ingredients with a hand mixer or by hand as desired. Store in a old toothpaste dispenser by cutting the end off and filling with your toothpaste. Seal the end with duck tape until it is ready for a re-fill or you can just put it in a small container that is sealable.
Homemade Deodorant
I have to proud to say that I finally converted my husband to using my deodorant recipe and he loves it. He has noticed such a difference and does not sweat as much. I have not seen him yet rubbing vinegar on his pits or radishes but he does love this recipe. I changed the measurements since we like to make it in bulk.
Ingredients:
10-12 tbsp. Coconut oil
1/2 cup of baking soda
1/2 cup arrowroot powder.
Drops of EO’s of choice (lemon, melaeluca, peppermint, ect)
Method
Place baking soda and arrowroot in a bowl then begin to add the coconut oil until its the consistency you like. Add your essential oils and mix well.
We just put this on with our fingers or you can put it in an empty deodorant dispenser if you like. Please note that if you keep this in your bathroom and you bathroom temp changes when you take a shower or something; since it has coconut oil in it then it will liquefy a little bit. Don’t worry this is normal and it will go back solid when it cools off. You can always stick it in your fridge if you like. I sometimes do this because I like the cool feeling it has..LOL! Nothing like going to your fridge and rubbing on your pits what looks like frosting….haha!
Best Diaper Cream
Ingredients
2 tsp beeswax
2 1/4 tbsp. lanolin
1/4 tsp. Shea butter
6-8 tbsp. Castro oil
15 drops of favorite EO’s
My favorites are…. lavender, patchouli, geranium, juniper, and melaeluca.
Method
Melt the wax in double broiler then add the oil and Shea butter…when that is all melted take it off the heat and add the lanolin, it’s heat sensitive. After the lanolin has melted add the eo’s and pour into jars and let cool. You can add or take away depending on how thick you like your diaper cream.
My kids hardly get diaper rash so therefore I do not make this often thus why I do not have a picture of it. Also it takes a bit of prep and some time but it really is good stuff.
Bath Salts:

Method:
Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl, stirring well to incorporate the baking soda and essential oil.
Divide between jars as desired.
Use immediately, or store in an airtight container.
To Use: Add 1/4 – 1/2 c per bath
I have some more things that I love to make like masks, detangler, body spray, , ect. I’ll share those with you another time. I don’t make everything, I just don’t have the time nor if its not my favorite then its not worth me going through the trouble to make it. Also use what you have first, don’t waste things! You don’t have to make these all at once, use what you have then try and make a batch when you see your running low on something. This is what we did. There is no use in throwing stuff away and being wasteful. I have not tried a recipe I like for shampoo and conditioner so I just buy them. Also soap making is a very long process so I just buy a natural one for our family to use. I will do a post to share with you my favorite products I buy if I do not make them myself. Until then, I hope you found this useful in helping you become more frugal and natural.
